Friday, January 5th: We are simultaneously awaiting repair on the tie-rods of the van and word of ice conditions up in the Upper Penninsula from George Reis and Don Williams. By 3:30 we had the van and trailer loaded and we were on the road receiving reports of boats going through the ice. With that information, we pointed the van West. The seating of the van allowed for three people to sleep while one driver and one navigator drove the 13 hour trip.
5:45 AM Saturday: We arrive at Ernie's on Gull Lake - the official launch site. It is still dark and we identify Doug Harvey's van parked by the shore. Several boats are set up already but we are tired and there is no sign of life at this hour. Desiring a shower, we called the hotel and they allowed us an early check in, and a chance to freshen up and lay down on a comfortable bed for just a few minutes before heading back to the launch site.
We all had a little extra work rigging our boats for the first time of the season. Mike Deye was preparing his DN for its first ride (and his first race). He was nervous, but was excited to finally get to use the craft he has been working on so long. The locals were now well into their 7th consecutive week of sailing, so we had our work cut out for us.
The Gold Fleet (in which Chris Teal, Aaron Stange, Richard Potcova, and George Reis were sailing) had 5 races and the silver fleet raced 4.
At the end of the day we took down our sails, pulled our runners, and headed into Ernie's for food and refreshment. The service and food was fantastic. Other sailors were enjoying the atmosphere as well, but we soon realized it was in our best interest to head back to the hotel before we go too tired. We found the hot tub at the hotel to be quite soothing on the sore muscles. Somewhat rejuvenated we felt up up to having a few rum concoctions at the hotel bar. A few too many for sure, but we were in bed by 11:00 PM. Around 3 PM a few of us were awakened by a persistent soft knock at the door. It was Mike who had apparently sleepwalked outside and was now feeling the sobering Minnesota chill.
10:00 AM Sunday: We had a dusting of snow overnight and now there was more wind than yesterday. We rigged up and Silver completed 4 Races and Gold had 3 more. The higher winds made for some excitement at the mark roundings.
After dismantling our boats and hooking up the trailer we went back into Ernie's for some lunch and to await awards ceremony. I ended up with a 4th in Silver fleet and Aaron Stange was Second in the Gold Fleet.
The ride home was uneventful, save for the two members of our team that got lost in a box of wine in the back of the van on the way home. That left just three weary drivers to make the long trip home, part of which was in the worst snow storm we had seen. But the inebriates made up for their shortcomings by providing some entertainment.
