Ice Report WARNING! Ice reports given on the TIYC.net site are to help sailors decide on where the best ice is before they load up and start traveling. There is no Guarantee that the ice is safe! Holes, pressure ridges, foreign objects, and snow drifts can appear at any time in any place. Always sail with other people, and always check the ice and ask other sailors where the danger areas are before setting out. Remember, you are taking a risk no matter what the conditions appear to be.
Generally reports will be made for the Maumee Bay Area North of Man-Made (also called "Grassy") Island. Public Launch Access is available at the end of 125th street. If better ice presents itself in the Toledo area, we will post the location and conditions here. In order to be considered eligible for racing, you must be a member of TIYC or a recognized yacht club and you must present your proof of liability insurance (minimum $300,000) to the race committee at a general meeting (preferable) or prior to the skippers meeting. For more information go to the rules and forms page.
Scroll down to see reports only if you agree not to hold the Toledo Ice Yacht Club, or any of its members liable for errors or omissions in these or any reports of ice conditions or weather. <> <<>> <<<>>> <<<<>>>> <<<<<>>>>> <<<<<<>>>>>> <<<<<<<>>>>>>> For latest reports you can call: TIYC Hotline ***419-726-9811*** Click Here for Live Weather on Maumee Bay Click Here for a Map to Maumee Bay Click Here for a Map to Sand Lake Saturday, December 29th, 2007 Walled lake, near Novi, Michigan is the only good ice this side of Montana.
Friday, December 28th, 2007 No new reports from Lake Lansing. 3-5 inches of snow forecasted for that area, so I think we need some pretty reliable ice reports to want to travel there. Hopefully we can get a report tonight and if needed a confirmation in the morning. Thursday, December 27th, 2007 The Maumee Bay Ice Blew out again last night. Good thing too because it looked pretty rough and rotten. Recent Michigan State Graduate, Rob Linden headed up to Lake Lansing to sail following tips of good ice there. He reports that there was very light wind (0-8 mph) ice was pretty good, there were a few snow patches, up to 2" but they were easy to stay clear of. Enough ice to make a 3/4 mile course for a small number of boats. He will keep us updated on conditions for the weekend. Rob also reported Lake Whitmore looks great, but no-one has checked it. If anyone does be aware there is a Spring on south side near shore. Would appreciate any information on sailability and launch sites for this Lake.
Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 Ice was blown out a few weeks ago on the Maumee Bay. Now there is rough ice filling in gradually. Hopefully it will blow out before colder weather comes next week. Rob Linden's Michigan State connections have reported 4-5" of ice over 80% of Lake Lansing. He will be sailing it today and giving a report later. Looks like a great opportunity to get some practice in during Christmas break! No other reports from South-East Michigan at this time. Saturday, December 8th, 2007 Ice is still holding on here on the Maumee Bay. Wamplers is being sailed. Apparently it is some of the best ice available in the region such that the Minnesota people hosting the Junior Opti NA's moved it to Wamplers... Its s short drive for anyone who wants to sail or watch! Just a few miles north of Sand Lake in the Irish Hills. Go to Jerry's South Shore Pub off Egan Hwy off US12 Thursday, December 6nd, 2007 Last night was excellent ice-making conditions here on Maumee Bay. Too bad it is way too early. Good looking sheet out there this morning, but I don't see it sticking around long enough to become sailable. Warmer temperatures and wintry mix expected this weekend. Glen reports that Sand Lake is Frozen, but has a Zoll-Hole, HOWEVER at this time Wamplers Lake is frozen and might be good.
Sunday, December 2nd, 2007 First winter storm of the season last night. I-75 hazardous ice conditions. Snow covered ground this morning. Ice flows blow in to shore. Word is that there was sailing on Houghton Lake Saturday. Last nights storm probably put an end to it though. Minnesota also had some sailable ice which was ruined by snow. Being early in the season there is plenty of open lakes everywhere that will yield good ice later... Friday, November 23, 2007 Ice Spotted on the edges of the Ottawa River
