Jan 10-11 2004 Sand Lake - Saturday Jan. 10 - 7 races were sailed for the Meilink. First two races were light air, then the gusty stuff filled in. The last five races had great wind and made for some exciting leeward mark roundings. We had about 18 DN's racing. There were a few non-racing DNs, a renegade, and a pretty trick looking B-Skeeter. Ice at the launching area was 4-6 inches of white ice, then you walk about a half mile where 3/4 of the lake was fresh green ice about 2-3 inches thick. Spooky in some places it was so clear you felt like you were walking on water. We learned early on not to stand close together in big groups when a loud "CRACK" sent the group scattering in all directions. Luckily the new cracks were water tight and the ice did not seem to move. The new marks were in use and very easy to see. Sunday Jan 11 - from Rich Potcova: We went back to Sand Lake
but were pretty much blown off the ice. Charlie Darr, Jeff Huffman and
appliance magnate Chris Durocher were the only DN's to set up and sail. There
were 3 Skimmers that showed and sailed. Glen got his Renegade out Maumee Bay - Saturday Jan. 10. Nat Kolling walked the ice and decided it was sailable at noon. Set up his Renegade and had the bay to himself. Sunday Jan. 11 There were 3 DN's, 2 Skimmers, a Renegade, and an A-frame Iceboat were all out enjoying gusty winds. The speeds attained by the Stern-Steered A-Frame surprised us all. Temperatures were much warmer - great sailing and much fun. Thanks to Scott Crothers for contributing many of the photos of Sand Lake
